Port Royal, Jamaica
The underwater ruins of Port Royal in Jamaica date from the late 17th Century when pirates used the town as a base under the protection of the notorious British governor and pirate Sir Henry Morgan. The town of Port Royal was built on silt, and in an earthquake in 1692 it sank beneath the Caribbean.
Port Royal contained four forts and 2,000 buildings before it sank.
Famous pirates who used Port Royal included the notorious Calico Jack, Charles Vane, and Blackbeard.
