In a program from TLC’s ‘My Strange Addiction’, We see Heather Beal, 43 from Alabama has a revealed her secret compulsion… strange addiction.
Heather is addicted to drinking paint. Yes, Paint. The mother of two admits she has drank close to three gallons of paint since her addiction started. She says she has kept the addiction secret from her children and goes to the car daily to drink paint pens in private.
Sometimes her children have a laugh and tell her that her breath smells toxic! Well, guess what kids, mommy really does have toxic breath, because paint contains chemicals which can cause cancer and damage to the kidneys.
Heather has tried all different types of paint, but she prefers the type from small paint markers
Heather said her children ask why I have white stuff in my mouth and on my lips, I have to come clean about my addiction and get help, I’m worried about the effects its having on my body.
But what caused this strange addiction? We discover Heather started drinking paint when her mother died, what on earth made her try it we don’t know, but we know some of the effects it can have on people; Most inhalants depress the central nervous system like alcohol does, but inhalant abuse can also cause relaxation, euphoria, slurred speech, hallucinations, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.
Heather claims drinking paint feels like drinking a ‘thicker version of warm milk’. Yum, sounds creamy!
In a later episode of the show Heather seems to get a wake-up call after she visits a doctor and learns that she has damaged her kidneys. The conversation with the doctor seems to be the kick up the backside Heather needs and she decides to ditch the paint for the sake of her family.
